Tucked away between hipster Balaclava and leafy Ripponlea, this gem has quickly become my “go-to” place for brunch. You’ll fall in love the second you walk in– it’s big and airy with quirky yet classy deco.
This place is the prize gun in my arsenal- I bring everyone here. So much so that I don’t even have to look at the menu anymore. Of course the dream is that one day I walk in and the staff greet me by name and say “the usual?”
The star on the menu is Big Ed’s Scrambled Eggs- a pimped up version of everyone’s favourite. Creamy eggs with bacon, chili and basil, topped with zingy salsa verde with chunky garlic toast on the side. Other contenders are the fluffy pancakes with berry coulis and the Mexican corn and black bean fritters. For all you lunch lovers, please don’t go past the BBQ pulled pork sandwich with shoestring fries. It tastes like it’s been slow-roasted in some Texan backyard.
Let’s not forget the divine coffee or the freshly-squeezed juices. The wait staff here won’t judge you for ordering soy or decaf (I live in fear of the eye-roll & sigh combo), and the orange and watermelon juice is a favourite.
Speaking of service, H&H has the hottest, friendliest, and most attentive staff in town. They’re a lively bunch of hipsters whose girl/boy-next door good looks will inspire blushes in the most hardened of hearts. Even on busy weekends (and this place does burst at the seams on a Saturday morning) you’ll never wait longer than 10 minutes for a table.
And for my fellow sweet-toothed peeps, if you’re searching for the perfect post-brunch treat, you won’t be disappointed. The salted caramel and chocolate brownie is so good it’ll make you want to slap your mama, and the cupcakes are little dollops of heaven.
So if you’re like me and you like your breakfast quirky with a side of piping-hot waiter, this is your spot.
