During my very first weekend in Melbourne, I got hopelessly lost in the city. I was jetlagged, the accents were confusing, and I had yet to spot anyone from the Home and Away cast. Just as I was on the verge of a tantrum I spotted a bright red sign down a laneway. The rest, as they say, is history.
Brown Sugar Café is tucked away on Block Place, just off Little Collins Street. Blink and you’ll miss the turning!
The café is small and cosy, with warm wood accents and no more than about ten tables squeezed in. Block Place itself is tiny, with cafés and restaurants jostling against each other for space. Come rain or shine, you’ll always find tables spilling out onto the cobbled laneway.
It’s the perfect spot for a romantic afternoon date or some much-needed me time. I love to perch in a quiet corner with a book, order a coffee and settle in for the afternoon.
I then proceed to quietly lose my mind over the dessert cabinet. There are all manner of sweet delights on offer. Zingy lemon slices rubbing shoulders with divine chocolate cupcakes. Rocky road chunks nestled next to rich red velvet muffins. Le sigh.
The staff are young, hip and won’t judge you for devouring two slices of the silky sweet lemon tart in one sitting. I assume, of course. I’ve never actually DONE that (coughs discreetly).
As well as the heavenly sweets, it’s the ambience that keeps me coming back for more. The vibe down these hidden laneways is easily one of the best things about Melbourne. You get to watch the world walk past your table. I also enjoy eavesdropping on the hot gossip between the wait staff from all the different cafés. She did WHAT? With WHO? Saucy!
Make sure you add this adorable café to your Melbourne wishlist!
